    Materials Science and Metallurgy

    About

This course is designed to provide further training in research in Materials Science after a minimum of at least 3 years university-level education to UK Bachelors level, or overseas equivalent. Students should have achieved at least an upper second honours degree prior to admission and the department will take into consideration their academic results, content of references, and prior research experience when deciding whether or not to offer a place. Applicants should identify potential supervisors, and provide a short project description, in section A(12) of the GradSAF, so that their papers can be considered by appropriate members of academic staff, and a suitable project area identified. Candidates will be interviewed by telephone or Skype. It is important to note that limitations on space and the equipment and research facilities available mean that we cannot always make an offer, even to a well-qualified applicant.

    Short Description

This full time course is designed to provide further training in research in Materials Science after a minimum of at least 3 years university-level education to UK Bachelors level, or overseas equivalent. Students may continue to PhD level research (which takes a minimum of a further 3 years) after successful completion of the MPhil.

    About

Research training within the Department has several essential components, the first and foremost being the research project itself, to which you will make a significant contribution. This will give you experience and training in a variety of experimental and/or clinical research techniques, but will also teach you how to organise research, plan experiments, and read and digest the scientific literature relevant to your research work. Most research groups have weekly or fortnightly meetings in which all members discuss each others work.

    Short Description

Graduate training is very different from undergraduate courses. Its based on individual needs and abilities, and is designed to help you to think clearly, originally and practically, and to prepare you for leadership in science. We teach our graduate students how to plan and carry out cutting-edge research. Cambridge is an amazing place to learn how to do research.

    About

Applications are co-ordinated by CRUK CI. Prior to submitting the on-line application form (GRADSAF), you should identify a supervisor in the Institute who is willing to host you for M.Phil study. The Institute accepts only a few M.Phil students every year, mainly because bench space is very limited and so competition for places is particularly fierce. In the main, applicants are successful if they are recognized as bringing a valuable technique or methodology to their host lab.

    Short Description

The MPhil course lasts for 12 months, during which time the student is expected to complete a research project, and write and submit a thesis of less than 20,000 words in length. The student will then be examined orally on the thesis and on the wider field of knowledge into which it falls. The students are provided with information which clearly sets out what is expected of them during their period of research in order to obtain their degree.

    About

The Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR) is one of the leading research institutions in the UK and provides a unique interface between clinical and basic biomedical science, aiming to understand the cellular basis of disease. 40% of our researchers are clinically active, and we have a demonstrated record of translating our basic research into successful clinical application. Our researchers use cell biology to understand molecular mechanisms of disease and conversely use genetic disease to reveal crucial mechanisms of cell biology. Although our research has particular strengths in key cell processes (membrane trafficking and protein folding) as well as biological areas (immune system and neuronal function), an important asset at CIMR is the breadth of disease areas that our research impinges on, and it is this that allows us to reveal fundamental principles of disease and infection. Crucial to this is the use of multiple approaches, including genetics, and cellular and structural biology.

    Short Description

The Cambridge Institute offers a one-year full-time MPhil programme of research under individual supervision of Principal investigators based in CIMR. This course can also be taken as part-time option over two years. During their MPhil the students are based in a research group, supported by their primary supervisor and the CIMR Graduate Education Committee.
